How long do hurdles last?

If untreated hurdles will last aprroximately 8 to 9 years. For a long life hurdles should be treated with a preservative such as Creosote or Cuprinol. For a greener alternative try a mixture of linseed oil and white spirit.

How are hurdles erected?

Hurdles should be suspended on round posts by tying them to posts with galvanized wire or tree ties. The points at the bottom of the hurdles should be about 2 inches from the ground to avoid damp creeping up the hurdles.

How do I avoid buying lesser quality imported hurdles?

Most imported hurdles do not have split hazel in them. Smaller wood in the round is generally used. This makes for a shorter lasting hurdle.
Look out for the twists. Quality wattle hurdles should have at least four twists per rising foot around the end sails (uprights).
